Longer Journeys for which I didn’t keep a web journal:
For a bit of a summary of some longer journeys between 1986 and 2006 for which I did not keep web journals, see the about page of my 2006 CDT trailjournal.
October 2004 to May 2005: Bushwalked and hitched my way around eastern Australia.
Summer 2000:
June 2000: Cycled from Nelson, BC to the Pacific Ocean via the Kettle Valley RailTrail and various connecting roads.
July and August 2000: Cycled, with my then-partner Karen, from Prince Rupert, BC to Inuvik, NWT, the most northerly place in Canada accessible by road.
September 2000: Cycled from near Victoria, BC to the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, then down the Sunshine Coast to Vancouver, BC, then to Osoyoos, in BC’s southern Okanagon.
Summer 1992: Walked along the continental divide from the US border into the Teton Wilderness, south of Yellowstone.
Summer 1990: Walked along the continental divide from the US border to near Banff, Alberta.
Summer 1989: Walked across southern British Columbia, from near Tofino on Vancouver Island to the continental divide near Banff, Alberta.
Summer 1986: Walked (with some hitchhiking) from Port Angeles, Washington, along the coast and then into the Sierras of Northern California, finishing the hiking portion of my journey in the Trinity Alps.
A few shorter trips worth mentioning (mostly as a memory aid for myself):
June/July 2007: A long weekend spent cycling and hiking with Karen in the Incomappleux Valley, an amazing and unfortunately threatened inland rainforest north of Nelson, BC. See journal at www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/incomappleux
August 2004: Cycled from Castle Junction (between Lake Louise and Banff in the Rockies) via Kananaskis and the Elk Valley back home to Nelson, BC, following as much as possible the then-as-yet incomplete route of the Trans Canada Trail (now re-branded as ‘the Great Trail’).
July 2004: 2 1/2 weeks of backpacking in the Canadian Rocky Mountains from Lake Louise to south of Banff.
June 2003: 5 day backpack on the Juan de Fuca trail, along the west coast of southern Vancouver Island. (Hiked the whole thing again in July 2016 over 4 days, as well as several shorter hikes along this trail – one of my favorites – over the years).
August 2001: 8 day backpack with Karen, over Jumbo pass into the east Kootenays then back to the west Kootenays via the Earl Grey trail.
Summer 1999: Backpacking trip with Karen to map a route along the ridgeline between West Arm Park and the Harrop/Procter area – I actually got paid for this one!
February 1995: Walked across the Cape in southern Baja, through the desert and the Laguna Mountains, from Todos Santos to Santiago, as part of a longer trip through Baja, Mexico.
Summer 1988: 2 week solo backpacking trip through the cascade mountains on both sides of the border (Canada/USA); 1 week backpack with a friend in the Stein Valley; and one week backpack with my father on the West Coast Trail (south to north).
